You don’t have to be a parent to be deeply impacted by our nation’s caging of children who have been separated from their parents. You just have to be a human being.
For decades we have sent our armed forces around the world to protect civilians from oppressive governments, war and insurrection. Today we violate those very basic American values and human rights we claim to defend on a global scale.
The outcry of the American people has not moved our government, has not changed policies… policies that have altered the way much of the world looks at us. We can no longer claim the moral high ground and are fast becoming the very nation our leaders have long spoken out against.
This is not a right or left issue, this is a humanitarian issue. We all believe in safe and secure borders. We understand we are a nation of laws; but we also are a nation of immigrants, a nation of hopes and dreams.
We must overcome our fears and anger and not let politics overwhelm our deep commitment to people. We call on leaders on both sides of the aisle—at all levels of government—to take a stand against these policies. Silence in the face of inhumanity is never acceptable.
Let us remember our women and men in uniform, stationed around the world, protecting those who cannot protect themselves. We should never forget, that is what it is to be an American.
